Do you ever find yourself looking at the Magazines and online layouts and thinking that your particular pages do not measure up? Does this tend to energize you or mesmerize you?
Because we see such beauty in these Magazine layouts or online we tend to think that we much somehow measure up to that. We lose sight of what it is we have been trying to accomplish since we started our mission to be a family historian. (next blog...)
It seems that the Magazines especially will show the current trends in scrapbooking and that is all you see. You no longer see any normal pages that are what most of us have done in the past and it can leave some thinking their pages do not measure up. Then some will believe that is the only way they can have a good looking page...case in point (as I was discussing with Donna just this morning) is the trend to only have one picture on a page. This is not a BAD thing but the caution for me is to not let this be the ONLY way you allow yourself to express your scrapbook bug.
I do love many of the one photo pages I have seen. Let me suggest that you use this on occasion as opposed to every single layout. I think we have more ability in digital scrapbooking to store this information but if you are doing a traditional scrapbook you would spend a million dollars only doing one photo per layout.
The second point is we still have trouble adding the journalling (blog entry coming....). If you only have one photo for a specific place, it can make up so much by adding journalling to the page. HOWEVER if journalling is the thing that keeps you from scrapbooking...then just do the page with no journalling. Better to have a page done with photos and a title than nothing! Making them works of art is a good idea for these people, but nothing should stop you from getting the pages done. Maybe someone else in your family enjoys writing and you can put them in charge of the journalling.
Here are some examples of what I have seen today.... lets discuss them on the club...you agree? disagree? You will have to sign in to scrapbookbytes to see these. Will try to find some 2peas ones also. This is a great site for inspiration might sign up anyway it is free..
Beautiful page...but something missing to me.....

found same thing on 2peas! http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/pg.asp?set=recent&gallery=4&cmd=display&layout_id=1248896
same person...different layout but the journalling adds so much

again same thing on 2peas http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/pg.asp?set=recent&gallery=4&cmd=display&layout_id=1248897
Another that seems beautiful but unfinished to me...

What a difference a little journalling makes...

One not as pretty but still as functional for this example...

My main point here is to encourage any who might be hesitant to do pages that are not considered a "work of art". I believe you could do many pages that are very special and take a lot of time and creativity, but allow yourself to continue to also be the family historian and make the special pages every few pages instead of every one...

I agree with what you are saying , I have done one picture lo 's but also have done more then one on page . I like the Becky H. book on LO's it helps . We can discuss this in our group a good thing . Some pages do not need journaling & others do , depends on the Lo . Good idea let's do it . Aj.
I too think that one picture on a layout should be a special occasion or something. I would never get much done if i did one picture ones but doing digital i can see where people can do that more. I like the few i did with one picture but i do not do it too often as i like the more pictures on the page to give more feel of what is going on for that event.
usually when I do one picture layouts it's because that's the only pic I took of the event or person. But I do believe that it looks much better if you journal on that kind of layout. I also like the layered look or using a large embellishment. But mostly the more I scrap the more I try to put as many photos on a page as possible. LOL.
I prefer one picture layouts but will use up to three. I am getting used to working with more and cutting photo's down now for small squares that can be used for embellishment or boarders.
I don't like the new scrapbooking where there seems to be so much happening on the page I prefer the simple approach to scrapbooking so the picture isn't lost in all the bling and swirls and all the rest that is used in today's layouts.
I do agree also that I feel like my pages aren't good enough because they are so basic and I think that the magazines should go back to realising this as well we all don't want to be bombarding our pictures with embellishments..As the saying goes "The Simple things in life are often the best" in saying that thou I am not saying all of these layouts are ugly just not to my taste.
Love your blog thanks for sharing!
